Clan Commander

Clan Commander Iain Morris McFie.

The Lord Lyon King of Arms, the Honourable David Sellar has appointed Iain Morris McFie Esq. of Coulintyre, Kincraig, Kingussie, Scotland as Ceann-Cath or Commander of Clan Macfie.

Clan Commander Iain Morris McFie esq. of Scotland with his wife Fiona

The appointment follows our then Clan Commander, Sandy McPhie of Townsville, Q. Australia expressing a wish earlier in 2008 to stand down after 19 years in office. The Lord Lyon authorised a Clan ad hoc derbhine to convene to find a successor as Clan Commander. The derbhine, consisting of Clan Macfie Armigers around the world, duly selected Iain McFie from within its own ranks and Petitioned the Lyon to appoint him a Ceann-Cath or Commander of Clan Macfie.

Iain and his wife Fiona are well known to many Clan members through their dedication since 1993 as Co-ordinators for the quadrennial Clan Gatherings and Clan Parliament in Scotland. Iain, a former President of the Clan Macfie Society in Scotland, received a grant of arms in March 1998. He was appointed Commisioner for Clan Macfie in Scotland by the Clan Commander that year. He has also been the Keeper of The Clan Macfie Records for many years.

Clan Commander Profile

Born on the 10th of March 1936 Iain was the second son of Robert and Elizabeth McFie.

On completion of National Service he was employed for ten years as a designer draughtsman. He then moved to work as a Civil Servant in a Royal Ordnance Factory. As a designer he worked on small mechanisms before joining the Governments Adult Training Service as an Instructional Officer. His last promotion to Senior Training Officer moved Iain to Inverness.

Initially working for the Manpower Services Commission (MSC) in Inverness Iain was seconded to Highland and Islands Enterprise (HIE). He took early retirement after three years in Inverness, but was retained as a Consultant. After several years of working from home as a consultant to small companies he decided to stop work altogether. However, boredom set in and he now works during the holiday seasons at the Highland Wild Life Park, which is a two minutes walk from his home.

While working in engineering Iain studied for and obtained both Mechanical and Production Engineering qualifications he latterly obtained a BA Degree in Adult Education Management. Since 1981, Iain has been the president of the Scottish branch of the International Organisation of Good Templars and also Chairman of the Scottish Temperance Alliance.

He and his family found a lovely home two miles from Kincraig close to the River Spey, probably too close as it sometimes comes and visits.

Iain and Fiona met at school and have been married for fifty-one years. They have three sons and a daughter, Roderick, Rhona, Ronald and Robin. They also have four grandsons and a granddaughter, the mother of their great grandson.

Keen on sport Iain played rugby for his school, Regiment in England and Germany and also his Division. On leaving the Army he was instrumental in forming his School's former pupils team and was its Captain for ten years and continued to play until his forty-second birthday. He was/is still keen on skiing, one reason for moving to Kincraig, and enjoys long walks in the hills. Building dry stone dykes is another hobby.

Recent reports in Clan News no 76 stated that Iain had suffered a minor stroke. Iain has released the following statement:

To all those who wrote and sent get well cards and facebook messages wishing me good health and a speedy recovery, I send my sincere thanks.

The "stroke" was a mis-diagnosis (thank goodness). It was a disc in the spinal column in my neck that had moved. Fortunalty this was spotted by a sharp eyed surgeon when they were checking an MRI scan of my head so they decided to do a second scan to do all of the spine in case there was anything futher to be done.

I am at present in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where I have undergone two operations. I'm doing well, but it is just a case of physio to learn to walk properly and to regain the use of my hands again.

Iain.

I have a further update on the Commander I want to share with you.

He has now been moved to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for his rehabilitation. This hospital is a brand new (opened in 2015) state of the art hospital with a special Surgical Spine Surgery unit. The Commander is settled in and ready to start his rehab. Being moved to Glasgow is good news for him as he has many friends and family members close by to visit him. I talked to his brother, Bob, on Monday and he tells me that Iain is in good spirits and doing well.

Many of you have asked if you can write him or send a card. I'm sure he would enjoy hearing from you.

His address is:

Iain McFie, Patient
Spinal Surgeries Unit
Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
1345 Govan Road
Glasgow, Scotland
United Kingdom

I won't be sending out any further updates unless there is a major change in his condition.

Slainte!
