September
2nd – 6th 2009 Nethy Bridge Travel Nethybridge is not on either the main line rail or bus service routes. Aviemore, fourteen miles to the west is the nearest town with both train and bus connections from London, Edinburgh and Glasgow. There is an infrequent bus service from Aviemore to Nethybridge. There are two trains a day from London. The Sleeper service arriving in Aviemore at 07.40 and a day journey, which arrives in Aviemore at approximately 19.30, Trains from Edinburgh and Glasgow are two hourly. The journey takes three and a half hours. Waverley Station is the main Edinburgh station though you can also board at Haymarket. It, Waverly, can be accessed from Princes Street. The main station for Glasgow is Queen Street. While this is some distance, too far to walk, from the Hilton and Marriott there is very close by an Express Holiday Inn The Bus terminal
in Edinburgh is at St Andrew’s Square, which is two blocks north
of and at the east end of Princes Street, near to Waverly Train Station.
Both Citylink and Mega Buses operate from here and pass through Aviemore
on route to Inverness. In Glasgow the terminal for buses is Buchanan
Street depot. It to is close to the Express Holiday Inn. Buses are two
hourly and take about three and a half hours to reach Aviemore. Some
buses and trains may require you to change at Perth. We can as at previous Gatherings if there is sufficient interest run our own bus from Glasgow direct to the Hotel in Nethybridge. We would also dissuade you from hiring a car, as you will make little use of it at Nethybridge or on Colonsay. The ferry fare in 2005, for a small car, was £54.00 single journey. However if returning within five days the return fare was £90.00. These fares could be substantially higher in 2009. We will not know the timetable and fare schedule for Colonsay until the spring of 2009. If there are enough numbers to justify hiring a bus to take you from Oban to Glasgow on our return from Colonsay then we will arrange to have bus at the pier. However if there are not enough the alternative is either use the regular bus service to Glasgow or take the train. The train station is at the Harbour as is the bus terminal. Edinburgh and Glasgow airports receive flights from America and Canada. You can fly to Inverness from London, Edinburgh
