Forgive me for adding a little bit of nostalgia. As most of you will know, Jim MacFee died earlier this year. Not only did I consider him to be a dear friend, but he was also a faithful contributor to The Galley. So, I thought I would indulge you again with one of his funny stories and a favourite of mine. False alarm at
The Evening Ceremony
The Tower of London

(Halt!, who goes there? “The Keys”)
The investigation, which followed, revealed that the guard on duty at the time was a temporary acting Scottish Yeoman. In his statement he said:

‘I immediately raised the alarm when in response to the traditional challenge I thought I heard, “The MacFies.” It is understood that the guard came from Oban.’

This is one of the many tales told by an old friend of mine who was born within the sound of Bow Bells.

He phoned me on Hogmanay a week after his 85th birthday. I enquired about his health, ‘fine’, he said ‘except I’m a bit worried about my sperm count.’

Laughter follows Frank, my English friend, everywhere. I am glad I met him.
